Jonas had become so disgusted by the community and his father's lies that he felt escape was his only option. When he found out that Gabriel was going to be release, Jonas decided that he had no choice but to leave immediately. Jonas escaped the community to save Gabriel's life and also for the memories to be released into the community. He was hoping that the community would be able to regain their freedom and that the Giver would be able to teach them how to deal with their memories.
During his escape, Jonas experienced the joy of nature and wildlife. He also felt pain, fear and hunger. Jonas traveled for days and days with Gabriel. As time went by, Jonas and Gabriel were dying of starvation and hypothermia. Jonas made it to the top of the hill. The snow was thick and the weather was cool. Jonas found a sled. They got on the sled and started sledding down the hill. While he is going down the hill, he opens his eyes and he could see lights and heard people singing. He goes towards the light. The book leaves the ending unclear.

I liked the book. I felt it had a good message. In the book, the community is easily controlled because the people do not have the ability to have memories. Memories are important to humans because without them, we lack the ability to make choices. In the book, The Giver and the Elder lie to the people by making them believe that release is a good experience, which in reality is death.
I would recommend the book because it is a classic and I also feel that it teaches us the importance of memories which gives us freedom of choice. It also teaches us that we should not take things for granted because some day we might not be able to enjoy something as simple as a memory. We should be thankful for memories and cherish them.
