This book is like the book 1984. I have not read 1984, but my friends are reading it. From what they have told me, 1984 also takes place in a futuristic environment. In The Giver they have a speaker in their house so that the Elders could hear what they were saying. In 1984 they have the same thing. Also another thing similar is death. In The Giver you get released from the community if you do something bad, the same thing applies in 1984. In conclusion, 1984 is like The Giver.

I connected with Jonas, because he loves old people and so do I. I think old people are cute with their little walkers. Jonas liked Larrisa before she got release. He liked how she was gentle and how she told them of the releases of the other Elders. Jonas liked the Elders because sometimes they would tell him of stories when they were a child. I love hearing stories of when my grandpa used to work in the peanut fields and during the summers he would cut open watermelons and eat them fresh. He also used to cut off sugar cane and eat it. Jonas liked volunteering at the house of old and helping old people. I love helping my grandma cook and put away dishes, I find it fun. In conclusion, I connect with Jonas.

In the book, The Giver, the society rules state that if any member of the community breaks three major rules they would be released. Unfortunately in our world today societies exist that believe in Honor killing. Honor killings is the murder of a member of a family by other members because they believe that person brought shame to the family. In addition, other societies exist that believe in killing members of their community , whether through religious beliefs or community conviction because that person broke a society rule.

In the book, the people were disgusted with individuality. Everyone has to be the same. In a way that applies to us today. You see, if someone famous wears Uggs, then everyone wants Uggs. If people like yoga pants, then everyone wants yoga pants. If people like Starbucks then everyone wants Starbucks. In today's world, that's the popular people. At some schools, if people don't have Uggs and they wear sneakers they might get bullied. So our world also puts down individuality because if someone does something different they think they are weird. Everyone must wear Uggs and yoga pants in order to be cool. So our society does detest individuality at times.
In the book, The Giver, when a member of the community no longer contributes to society, they were sent to the House of Old. In the House of Old, people are taken care by staff members that were assigned to that job at age twelve and volunteers as young as 8 years old.. They will remain in the House of Old until they are release. In our society when an elderly person no longer is able to care for themselves, they go to a convalescent senior center. They are taken care by staff members. Many stay in the convalescent senior center until they pass away.
